I used Katalox because 1) we had a sample board on hand that had been laying around for a couple of years in our wood room from LMI, and 2) because I thought the color of it looked great when matched with the neck wood and the body. Ebony has literally nothing to do with it. We have plenty of Ebony laying around too, and it's a great fingerboard wood, but so is Katalox. Just because it hasn't been used much since the 70's and 80's doesn't mean it isn't a good option. It's exceptionally dense and holds frets well, which are the only two things that really matter when it comes to selecting a fretboard wood.
The finish may not be for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with that. This particular finish was an experiment by our painter to try something interesting, which we will frequently do in Custom Shop on our inventory builds. This particular idea sounded fun, and looks great in the sunlight.
Pink guitars are cool. Sorry if you disagree.
